Teaching Tip #9

November 3, 2011

Focus on mastery by giving students a single topic assessment on a problem most all of them have mastered. This can give the whole class a sense of accomplishment!!! Ask students to reflect on what they have learned and what methods in class have helped them learn. This is when students will start to acknowledge that the having the ability to talk about the mathematics with their classmates is really helping them to understand deeper! Remember to keep this assessment and others positive by focusing on what students have mastered.  This can motivate students to work to master more topics they are still struggling with. Students who are failing on the basic concepts that most have mastered can benefit from a specific plan to help them. Sitting down with them and asking them what they can do differently to achieve success in class and reminding them of the support that is available to them-especially the extra practice and parent guide resources- is one way to start working on a specific plan for each struggling student.
